After your initial consultation, you will be scheduled for a follow-up. Follow-up appointments focus on your progress and response to treatment. How often you will be seen depends on your response to treatment, he severity of your symptoms, and the type of medication you’re being prescribed (controlled vs non-controlled substance). When your condition is stable and your symptoms have improved, the appointments can be less frequent. At a minimum, you will need to be seen once every 3 months if you are psychiatrically stable.
If you are in a crisis or have certain issues with your medication, or being prescribed regularly a controlled substance, you will have to see the psychiatrist more often (every 1-2 months). It all depends on your health or the type of medicaiton being prescribed.
Regular follow up appointments are 15 minutes. (in-person or over the phone only)
When more time is needed to address all relevant issues concerning your mental health, you will be scheduled for an extended follow-up visit. Some common scenarios for longer visits are: your psychiatrist is seeing you for psychotherapy in addition to managing medications, or your family members or significant others are joining the session.
